'Dear Esther: Landmark Edition' is Now Free on Steam Temporarily

Until Feb. 16, 2022 at 10 a.m. EST, the walking simulator is free to keep.

"Dear Esther: Landmark Edition," normally priced at $10.99CDN, is free on Steam for around two days. This is the first time "Dear Esther" has been available for free in its 10 years of release.

In "Dear Esther" the player walks around in and explores a desolate island. Throughout the adventure, a disembodied voice will read a letter titled "Dear Esther" in fragments.

"Dear Esther" is a first-person walking simulator with a large focus on story. The story is even "semi-randomised" according to the "Dear Esther: Landmark Edition" Steam Store page.

"Dear Esther" released in 2012 on PC, later releasing on mobile devices in 2019.

"Dear Esther" isn't the first walking simulator, with "The Graveyard" and other walking simulators coming out as far back as 2008. However, "Dear Esther" won multiple awards, such as:

  • The Best Original Idea award at Hoplay 2012

  • The Best Visual Art award at IGF 2012

  • Multiple awards at TIGA such as the Debut award, Startup award, and more

The "Landmark Edition" released in 2017, is a remake in the Unity engine that includes Directors' Commentary and audio remastering.

"Dear Esther" was developed by The Chinese Room and Robert Briscoe. The developed studio The Chinese Room has worked on multiple first-person games like "Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs."

Robert Briscoe is an artist in the video game field, being the Lead Artist & Designer for "Dear Esther." He has also worked on "Mirror's Edge;" the "Counter Strike: Global Offensive" map, DE_Nuke Remake; and more.

The Chinese Room will be releasing the definitive edition of their 2020 mobile device title, "Little Orpheus" on modern consoles.
