"Age of Empires: Definitive Edition" to "Age of Empires IV" now has its multiplayer servers down for routine updates and maintenance for matchmaking servers. This affects the Steam and Microsoft Store releases of these four titles.

Multiplayer matchmaking was closed exactly one hour from when server maintenance was to occur so games weren't forcibly discontinued. Any matches in progress when server maintenance started were closed.

While the "Age of Empires" games can still be launched, online features will not be available during server maintenance on the Steam and the Microsoft Store versions.

"Age of Empires" is a series of real-time strategy (RTS) games that began in 1997 where players build cities and battle with armies during multiple periods of history.

The "Age of Empires" series was mostly developed by Ensemble Studios, who has only worked on the series. One exception being "Halo Wars."

"Age of Empires: IV" released in 2021 and was developed by Relic Entertainment, who has made titles such as the "Company of Heroes" and "Warhammer: 40,000" Games.

The "Age of Empires" series also includes spin-off titles, such as "Age of Mythology."
